How it Works

Every home is different, but here’s a sample of how you might structure your week.

Watch the video

On Monday have your student(s) watch a tutorial video. These videos are accessed through your family login to the IPS website.

Photo shoot 1

After watching the video, have your student(s) go out and shoot their first assignment in your yard or neighborhood. Putting what they learned into practice right away will help them better connect with the lesson and remember it.

Review and critique

That same day look over the photos together, review how they used the things they learned to create more compelling images. Use the e-book on critiquing photography as your guide for what to look for and how to talk about it.

Photo shoot 2

On Wednesday have your student(s) go out and shoot a second assignment relating to the same lesson. This time take them to a location that lines up with the assignment they are working on.

Review and critique

Review this batch of photos while they are still fresh in the photographer’s mind. Take special note of improvement from the previous shoot.

Take the lesson quiz

Finish off the lesson by having your student(s) take the quiz to see how well they have retained the information throughout the week.

Required Equipment

To take this class students will need:

  • A digital camera with battery and memory card, of course
  • Personal computer with high speed internet access
  • Editing software (choose one): Picasa (free from Google), iPhoto (free from Apple), or Lightroom (from Adobe)
