Wedding Photography – iPhone style

Even though I have an expensive camera and a bag full of nifty gadgets, I still contend that photographers make photos, not cameras. Owning a Nikon doesn’t make you a photographer, it makes you a Nikon owner. I never enjoy a home cooked dinner and compliment my wife by telling her that, “the meal was so good, she must have great pans.”

As the latest proof of my theory, I offer this interesting blog post from professional photography Kenny Kim. Mr. Kim decided to see if he could photograph a wedding using just his iPhone. As you’ll see from the results… he did a pretty good job! Notably missing are ceremony shots where the lighting (I assume) was too low for the iPhone to be successful.

It is tempting as photographers to always push for better gear instead of pushing ourselves to be better photographers. Thank you Kenny Kim, and I raise my iPhone with you in pursuit of better Photographers!

Olympus Announces a New Toughie

Olympus has announced the new king of their line of tough cameras. As a professional, I’m always intrigued by cameras that can do things that my SLR can’t, and this Olympus is definitely in that category. Waterproof to 40 feet and designed to withstand drops of up to 6.5 feet, this camera will embrace experiences that would give most other cameras a severe case of camera shake!

I like the fact that the lens is a very bright f/2.0 at its widest (25mm equivalent) and that Olympus put their best autofocus system into it. Who wants to be waiting on their focus system while racing down a Class 4 rapids at 1080p?

This camera is definitely on my wish list!

VSCO for iPhone

As many photographers have discovered, VisualSupply.co makes a great set of Photoshop Lightroom plugins to emulate all sorts of old-school film effect. They have recently launched a similar product for iPhone, and I love it!

I suppose it isn’t really all that different than many of the other digital effects, but I have found that it gives a cleaner effect than my current favorite, Cross Process.

That clean effect may be the thing that moves me on from Cross Process to VSCO. If you’re up for yet another sweet camera process app for your iPhone, be sure to check out VSCO!

What Does Go Look Like?

IPS and Vision 4 Living Ministries have been friends for many years, and we’re really excited about their annual Passion4Christ conference. This year’s event will be held in Perrysville, OH from October 24-28 and focuses on the idea of what it means to make disciples. The Scripture is clear… we are to “…go make disciples.” So what does Go look like for you?

First Impressions of the Nikon D800

At first glance, I was pretty nervous about the image quality that would come out of the Nikon D800. Sure, on paper it looks impressive… who doesn’t want their best work recorded at an incredible 36 mega pixels? Some of the initial reviews indicated that despite the awesome specs, the actual image quality left much to be desired.

All that said, I’m encouraged by the latest review from dpreview.com based on their actual work with the Nikon D800. I’m going to say that the jury is still out in my head, but this is some really positive news.

Canon G1x Review

I was thrilled when Canon announced the G1x. Finally, someone figured out that what we (read, I) really want in a point and shoot is a REALLY BIG SENSOR. You see, I’m a quality freak, and little sensors are the biggest quality killers in smaller sized cameras. Just a few weeks ago, I nearly bought the G1x, but held back when I realized that it still doesn’t offer manual control over the aperture and shutter in video modes. Apart from that, it’s simply amazing…

Facebook Upsizes

On March 22, Facebook announced that they would be changing the way they display high resolution images. Their feature update means that images are dynamically sized at the largest size that fits on your screen up to either the max image size (i.e. the actual size you uploaded) or 2048px.

This brings up the question of “How do I protect my photos” as a photographer…

Personally, I keep the files I upload to Facebook sized at 720 pixels. That size is going to look great on all mobile devices and tablets, and most laptops. Yeah, it’s going to be a bit small if someone’s using a 30″ monitor… Images sized at 720 pixels can be swiped and put on someone else’s blog, but they can’t really be printed and still look good.

Another thing I usually do is stick a watermark on my photos. I’m not a fan of the “front and center” watermark, but a small logo in the corner says, “this is mine and I care about it.” Yes, someone could still crop the watermark out of the image, but I feel like I have done due diligence.

I’ll probably post a few high-resolution images to Facebook, but that’s going to be a carefully selected few, never a complete family photo shoot.

Remember, posting to Facebook is like telling everyone, and whatever you post can and will be used in ways you never imagined!

Slow Shutter Sports

When you think of sports photography, you usually think of fast shutter speeds to stop fast motion. Here’s an interesting gallery from the folks at Popphoto featuring some sports photography using slower shutter speeds.
