PhotoEx:Ireland | Day 7

Today, I lost an earring on a skellig. Skellig Michael to be more specific. I threw the other one in the Atlantic.

Today, I witnessed the most beautiful sight I have ever seen in my short life.  On a scale of one to ten, it was a seventeen.

Skellig Michael is an island off the coast of Portmagee, Ireland. It rises out of the ocean, 10 miles from the mainland. Christian monks lived there from 600 thru 1300, when they were driven away by harsh Atlantic storms. Awe is the only word I know to describe the feeling that came over me when I stood on the top of that mountain. What would make someone want to live on a tiny island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean? What would possess them to stay there for hundreds of years?! I can’t fathom what it would take to row a boat 10 miles from the main land just to live in pure solitude, fully dedicating my life to God and nothing and no one else. How different would my life be if I had that kind of dedication? How many others lives would be changed if I could be even just a little bit like those monks?  If I could fully grasp the beauty of life lived fully for God, if I could just capture that in a photograph, how would the world see Him?
